Clever Mathematical Creations

7:26 p.m. Thursday, July 30th 2009.

Last week I wrote this image app, where users can type in a mathematical function and the server processes an image based on that function. Apparently people had a lot of fun with it; they made some great images out of the math.

It started out with simple functions that produce neat images:

After some time, people were crafting elaborate works of art out of these functions:

Some depraved individuals tried their best to make things NSFW, and *really* NSFW.

People are still making images. You can see them as they're being generated here.

Wonderful application indeed! I was bugging around with it and actually I have done something but unfortunately it said the length cannot exceed 400 characters :(. I had a raytracer with full Lambert shading :/. You might try it privately maybe? No guarantee it works though, I hacked it in 5 minutes or so :), and I'd be interested to know if it works. You can grab the code from: http://beskrajnost.com/fragsworth-tracer Have fun! :)

Decipher: http://fragsworth.com/image_functions/19328/ I'm not sure what you had in mind here, but I think the Z scale might be off.

Ah it indeed seems to work :). The problem is, my color output is in the range 0.f : 1.f and thus it might be a little off, but the Lambert shade seems to work, and I think the light source is misplaced thus it shades the sphere way too much :/. But hey thanks for trying anyways! I am glad that sort of a monster code was partly working for a quick hack :D.

this is awesome! but, the gallery needs some sort of voting system, or a button wheter or not the generated image would come into the public gallery. i mean, 1300 pages in one week and populatirity growing is going to be rediculous.

also, if i use about 185 chars it still says it's above 200. (with the video's) 200 by itself is very few. pls allow longer strings or make the app available for offline calculations, so we can burn our own CPU with as long strings as we want.

Really nice posts. I will be checking back here regularly.
